Esports Coming Fall 2024 To Grace Christian University

Apr 5, 2024 | Blog

Exciting news in athletics at Grace Christian University! We will officially launch our Esports team in the Fall of 2024. Student-athletes will represent Grace Christian University in competitive Rocket League and League of Legends tournaments. Additionally, we have finished installing custom computers designed by our head coach of the Esports teams, Zach Johnston.

“Esports allows us to broaden our outreach to students who may not align with traditional athletic pursuits,” said Zach Johnston. Our Esports team will provide a way for those who have a passion for competitive video games to build connections and friendships with those who share the same passion, while challenging themselves to hone their skills in a competitive environment. Zach wants to incorporate a healthy lifestyle into his team’s culture by creating healthy eating habits and exercise routines into his team training. “We’re thrilled to provide this avenue for students to glorify God through discipline, teamwork, and healthy habits.”

The Rise of Esports in Collegiate Athletics

While once considered merely a recreational hobby, competitive video gaming has experienced a rise in popularity in recent years. In fact, the National Association of Collegiate Esports now reports approximately 300 universities sponsoring official varsity Esports teams, complete with coaching staff, structured practices, and a championship tournament. These programs come complete with dedicated coaches, rigorous training regimens, major tournament circuits, and scholarships. Top college teams have an opportunity to compete in national championships with awards of sponsorships and professional playing opportunities on the line for elite players.

Advantages of Esports

One of the biggest advantages of Varsity Esports is its ability to engage a completely new segment of the student population. Consequently, activities like video gaming, which were once solitary hobbies, now serve as a gateway to competitive team experiences.

“So many students who love gaming feel disconnected from the traditional college athletics scene,” Johnston explained. “Esports allows these students to apply their skills and passions toward something bigger than themselves. The benefits in terms of student engagement, community, and academic success are immense.”

Grace Christian’s Esports Future

Grace Christian’s Esports program will offer Rocket League and League of Legends teams in fall of 2024. However, the university anticipates continued growth by adding additional game titles, scholarship opportunities, and extended engagement with the Esports community.

This is merely the beginning of Grace Christian’s move into competitive video gaming. We feel privileged to help pave the way for Christian institutions in West Michigan in this arena of athletics. Our teams will strive to honor Christ in spirit and truth through their competitions.

Recruiting has already started for fall 2024. Reach out to Zach Johnston today for more information. zjohnston@gracechristian.edu
