Grace Christian University graduate Stacy Delgado is turning personal experience into significant impact. After earning her bachelor’s degree in business in May, Delgado also secured second place at the MWEST Pitch Challenge, winning $2,250 to support the launch of her innovative idea: the First Gen Success App.
What is the MWEST Challenge
The MWEST Challenge is a regional competition where students from universities across West Michigan present business ideas to a panel of judges. This year marked Grace Christian University’s first time participating, making Delgado’s achievement even more significant. Delgado’s app is designed to support first-generation college students by bringing essential resources into one accessible platform. The First Gen Success App will offer college and career readiness tools, direct mentorship opportunities, and a cross-campus community that connects students from different universities. The goal is to ensure that first-generation students have the guidance and support they need to succeed.
The Vision Behind the App
The idea for the app is rooted in Delgado’s own journey. As a first-generation college student, she experienced the uncertainty, and pressure that many students face. Instead of letting those challenges hold her back, she used them as inspiration.
“I’m building what I needed in college,” Delgado shared.
The day of the pitch brought both nerves and excitement. As Grace Christian University’s first student to compete in the event, Delgado stepped onto the stage with determination. Despite the pressure, she delivered a compelling presentation that resonated with the audience. Her preparation was supported by faculty mentors Professor McMurray and Dr. DeYoung, who met with her regularly to refine her pitch and strengthen her overall business strategy. With her $2,250 prize, Delgado plans to begin app development and expand marketing outreach. She aims to connect with universities, high schools, and first-generation students to gather feedback and build a platform that truly meets their needs. Delgado also hopes her journey encourages others.
“Anything is possible,” she said. “Even when it feels like you don’t have support or guidance, keep going. Keep asking for help, keep learning, and remember that what you’re going through is temporary. “As she steps into her postgraduate career, Delgado is already laying the foundation for a platform that could make a lasting difference for first-generation students.
