Years ago, a powerful storm tore through Grace Christian University’s campus, severely damaging one of the oldest oak trees near the fire pit. The tree stood in this damaged state for years. Many would have chosen to remove it, but Todd Coates, the director of facilities, envisioned something greater.
A Vision of Transformation
Todd saw the potential to transform the damaged tree into a cross, symbolizing the sacrificial death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The cross symbolizes Christ’s love, redemption, and the salvation He offers by dying for our sins. It stands as a symbol of hope, grace, and victory over sin, reminding believers of eternal life through faith. For many, it serves as a powerful visual of God’s unconditional love and His promise of redemption and new life.
With determination to create something meaningful, Todd reached out to local chainsaw artist Troy Boroff. Known for his intricate wood carvings, Troy eagerly accepted the project. Over four days, using only his chainsaw and dremel tool, he carefully carved the dead oak into a cross. This work now stands as a pillar of creativity and faith.
Crafting the Cross
The vertical part of the cross was shaped entirely from the base of the original oak tree. For the horizontal section, Troy added a separate piece of oak wood, completing the cross with precision and care. As a final touch, he intricately carved two birds looking upward at the cross, symbols of peace and reverence, as if gazing at the heavens.
A Symbol of Faith and Hope
Now standing near the fire pit, this cross embodies more than art; it reflects the university’s core values. It serves as a constant reminder that something broken can become a symbol of Christ’s love and sacrifice. Rooted in its original spot, the oak cross reminds all who pass by that, like the tree, we too can transform, no matter the storms we face.
At Grace, our athletic program often emphasizes the need to be “rooted” as a community, grounded in shared values and faith. This new cross beautifully represents that, as it stands with the old tree’s roots still intact. For students and staff, this artwork reminds us of Jesus’s sacrifice and our call to stay ‘rooted’ in Christ. Staying grounded in faith enables us to grow and mature as followers of Christ.
At Grace Christian University, where faith is integrated into every aspect of life, this oak cross serves as a daily symbol of the hope we have in Christ and the enduring power of God’s grace.
