Learning, Growing, and Serving: Renae’s Transformational Journey

Jan 19, 2025 | Blog

When Renae first enrolled at Grace Christian University to pursue a degree in psychology, she knew she was stepping into a community that would challenge her academically, spiritually, and personally. What she didn’t anticipate was how profoundly the program would shape her. Through her coursework, transformational relationships, and opportunities to serve her community, Renae’s time at Grace became a transformative journey. Her story reflects how the university’s psychology program integrates Biblical principles and learning in a way that prepares students for a lifetime of impact.

Faith and Psychology

Psychology and faith can often seem at odds. Even Renae recognized this tension early in her academic journey. “Psychology and the Bible, kind of like science, seem like they’re opposing at times,” she reflected. But Grace Christian University’s psychology program leans into this challenge, inviting conversations that explore how biblical principles intersect with the study of human behavior and mental health.

“In many of our classes, we have the flexibility to talk about the Bible and see things from a biblical perspective,” Renae explained. This integration allows students to wrestle with complex ethical and societal issues, such as abortion and mental health, through a lens rooted in Christian values. “It’s about being biblically centered in the truth of scripture and taking those values into account as you care for people who are hurting.”

Faculty members like Dr. Shaw play a pivotal role in guiding students through this delicate balance. From the start of the program, he makes it clear that psychology isn’t just about understanding human behavior; it’s about serving others with compassion while remaining grounded in faith. “Dr. Shaw reminds us that we’re called to uphold our values and show Christ’s love through our actions, kindness, and morals,” Renae shared. This mindset has helped her navigate the complexities of integrating her beliefs with her future career.

A Safe Space for Honest Conversations

Grace’s psychology program doesn’t shy away from tough topics, whether it’s cultural diversity, mental health, or ethical dilemmas. Instead, it creates an environment where students can openly discuss these issues while respecting differing viewpoints. “When we talk about hot-button topics, Dr. Shaw sets the tone by emphasizing respect and empathy,” Renae said. “It’s about listening with a heart posture of humility, even when we disagree.”

Renae recounted her experience in a cultural diversity class as an example. “I was nervous going in because culture is such an important but potentially controversial topic,” she admitted. However, the class turned out to be a space for meaningful dialogue, where students could share their perspectives without fear of judgment. “We were reminded that everyone comes from different experiences, and it’s our job to listen and empathize.”

This approach not only builds a supportive community but also prepares students for real-world situations where they’ll encounter diverse viewpoints. “As Christians, we’re called to love everyone, and we can do that by listening and showing respect,” Renae reflected. It’s a lesson she’s taken to heart as she prepares for a career in Christian counseling.

Practical Preparation for Real-World Ministry

One of the standout features of Grace’s psychology program is its emphasis on practical experience. Internships are a required component of the curriculum, giving students the opportunity to apply their learning in real-world settings. For Renae, these internships were transformative.

“It’s a chance to see how your faith and psychology come together in a professional setting.” These experiences not only helped Renae gain practical skills but also allowed her to build a network of connections within the psychology and counseling community.

The program also brings in professionals from various fields to speak with students, further broadening their understanding of career possibilities. “Dr. Shaw often invites people actively living out the Christian faith in their companies to present to our classes,” Renae said. “It’s a great way to explore different career paths and see how faith can be integrated into any role.”

Transformational Relationships

A defining aspect of Renae’s time at Grace has been the relationships she’s built with both peers and professors. With smaller class sizes, students have the opportunity to engage deeply with their instructors and each other. “When you’re in a class of 10 or 15 students, you really get to dive into discussions,” Renae said. “It’s a much more personal learning experience.”

These relationships have been a source of encouragement and growth. Renae highlighted her friendships with Bella, Stephanie, and Emily, who have walked alongside her through the ups and downs of her college years. “Bella and I became friends because we have almost every class together. We’ve supported each other through late-night study sessions and shared laughs about the challenges we face.”

The professors at Grace also play a critical role in creating a supportive environment. Renae fondly recalled a moment when Dr. Shaw comforted her during a difficult time. “I was crying in his office, and he gave me a fist bump and a side hug,” she said with a laugh. “It was such a simple gesture, but it reminded me how much he cares.”

Becoming a Courageous Ambassador for Christ

At the heart of Renae’s journey is her calling to be a courageous ambassador for Christ. Through her experiences at Grace, she has grown in her ability to integrate her faith into every aspect of her life. “The foundation of faith I’ve built here will be key to my future success,” she said.

Renae’s dream is to work in Christian counseling, focusing on middle and high school students. “I have a heart for youth ministry, and I want to walk alongside kids during such formative years,” she shared. For Renae, counseling is more than a career; it’s a way to reflect Christ’s love to a generation in need. “Even if you’re not directly talking about faith, the way you counsel with the love of Christ makes such a difference.”

Prepared to Make an Eternal Impact

Renae’s story is an example of the transformative power of Grace Christian University’s psychology program. It’s not just about earning a degree; it’s about being equipped to serve others with the heart of Christ. Through challenging coursework, hands-on internships, and an unwavering commitment to biblical values, Grace has provided Renae with the tools to make an eternal impact in her future career and community.

The personal attention from professors, the close-knit community of peers, and the intentional integration of faith and learning have empowered Renae to grow in confidence and compassion. “The relationships I’ve built and the lessons I’ve learned have prepared me for more than just a job; they’ve prepared me for my purpose,” she reflected.

As she steps into the next chapter of her life, Renae knows she’s not just leaving with a diploma; she’s leaving as a courageous ambassador for Christ, ready to serve others and share His love wherever her journey takes her.

Looking Ahead

As Renae prepares to graduate, she carries with her the lessons, relationships, and faith that have defined her time at Grace Christian University. Her journey is a powerful example of how learning, growing, and serving can come together to create a life of eternal impact. And for Renae, that’s a calling worth pursuing.
