The Value of a Degree in Human Services

Mar 7, 2025 | Blog

Human services is a calling to serve, to step into the lives of others with compassion, patience, and a willingness to help. It’s about being there for those in crisis, supporting families, and advocating for those in need. This work requires a heart for service and a dedication to making a real impact. If you feel called to serve others, a degree in human services can open opportunities to be a light in your community.

The Program

At Grace Christian University, the Human Services Program is built for people who want to make a difference. It’s not simply about studying theories; it’s about putting your faith into action. Dr. Scott Shaw, Dean of the School of Business Innovation and Public Service, oversees the program with a deep passion for service. “In the Human Services Program, we focus on serving.” Dr. Shaw explains. “In the classroom, we explore research and proven models to ensure we are equipped to serve well. Then, we take it into internships, community outreach, and hands-on service opportunities that prepare students to work alongside those making an impact in our communities.”

Preparing for a Life of Impact

The Human Services Program at Grace Christian University is designed to connect education with service. The goal is to apply what you learn in ways that truly matter. Students engage in coursework that prepares them for counseling, case management, crisis intervention, and advocacy. These lessons are framed within a biblical perspective, emphasizing Christ-like service to others.

At the heart of this program is the call to be the hands and feet of Jesus, to serve with compassion, humility, and purpose. Human Services students actively live out their faith by stepping into roles that bring healing and hope to those in need.

“Many people come to Grace and think, ‘I want to study ministry.’ Human services is an applied ministry in the setting of serving others, individuals, families, couples, children, or even broader agencies, that is what makes this program special,” says Dr. Shaw. The ability to take what is learned and turn it into action sets graduates from this program apart. Classroom discussions often revolve around challenges we are currently seeing in the world around us, and students are encouraged to think critically about how they can take a bold step forward and make an impact.

Professor Emilee Prins, a faculty member in the program, sees this transformation firsthand. “One of the things I love about teaching in this program is seeing students who are excited to work with people and serve, but they may not know exactly how yet,” she says. “Our classes give them a chance to develop their strengths and gain the skills to make a real difference.”

Grace’s Approach to Human Services

The Human Services Program provides a strong foundation that prepares students for a variety of career paths. Social work, counseling, criminal justice, nonprofit management, and community service are just a few of the fields students can pursue. The program is structured to help students determine what area of service best aligns with their skills and calling.

“I talk to a lot of students who say, ‘I know I want to help people, but I don’t know if that means social work, counseling, or criminal justice,’” says Professor Prins. “That’s why Human Services is such a great fit; it gives students exposure to different areas, from criminal justice to social work, counseling, and nonprofit leadership.”

This approach ensures that students develop a broad set of skills, making them valuable in multiple fields. The ability to communicate effectively, assess and respond to human needs, and navigate social systems prepares students to work in a variety of professional settings. With this strong foundation, graduates are adaptable and ready for careers that require both compassion and practical expertise.

Education That Leads to Meaningful Work

One of the defining features of the Human Services Program at Grace Christian University is its emphasis on practical experience. Education is important, but real learning happens when students step into the world around them and apply what they’ve studied in class.

Grace Christian University partners with local organizations to offer students paid internships. “One of the best things about this program is that students don’t just learn in the classroom; they get out and serve,” Dr. Shaw explains. “We require a six-credit internship, and we work hard to make sure students have access to paid internships. That way, they’re gaining experience, making professional connections, and receiving financial support.”

For many students, these internships lead directly to full-time jobs after graduation. “I’ve had so many conversations with students who graduate and step right into jobs,” says Dr. Shaw. “They’re working in human service agencies, with county and state programs, or serving in their churches. Their education at Grace gives them a strong foundation and real-world skills that make them invaluable employees.”

Internships provide not only hands-on experience but also the confidence and skills to step into careers that require leadership and compassion.

Faculty Support and Mentorship

One of the key strengths of the Human Services Program at Grace is the dedication of its faculty. Professors offer mentorship, guidance, and personalized support to help students succeed. Faculty members are available during office hours, provide career counseling, and even join students for meals in the cafeteria to foster connections outside the classroom. Online students receive just as much support, with regular virtual meetings, email communication, and phone calls to ensure they stay engaged and on track. This helps students navigate their career paths and can transform their future.

What Students Gain from the Human Services Program

Graduates of the Human Services Program walk away with far more than a diploma. They leave equipped with knowledge, practical experience, and a deep understanding of how to serve others effectively. Students develop communication and leadership skills, an ability to assess and address human needs, and experience working in real-world environments where they can immediately make an impact.

The program strengthens their biblical foundation, helping them integrate faith into their daily lives. “Students don’t just learn about human services; they learn how to serve others with compassion, wisdom, and faith,” Dr. Shaw emphasizes. “They walk away confident in their ability to make an eternal impact wherever they go.”

Additionally, students gain access to a network of professionals, alumni, and organizations eager to support and guide them into their future roles. By the time they graduate, they are well-prepared to step into meaningful careers that align with their passion for service.

Choosing a college program is a big decision. Grace Christian University’s Human Services Program offers students the opportunity to step into a lifetime of service, making a lasting impact wherever God leads. “If you have a passion for working with people and want to serve, this program is for you,” says Dr. Shaw. “There will always be people in need, and if you have a heart for this work, there will always be opportunities to serve.”
