Baseball drops two on Opening Day

Mar 3, 2023 | Athletics, Baseball

Baseball season is back in full swing! On Wednesday, March 1st, the Tigers were on the road for a double header against the Trinity Christian College Trolls. The Tigers are
in their second season as a team and are looking to build upon last year.

Game 1: The Tigers started out hot offensively and were able to get several hits throughout the first few innings, but couldn’t produce that first run until Carter Willis crushed a 2-run home run in the top of the 3rd inning. Yet the Trolls would also start out hot, as they put up 10 runs within the first two innings. The early deficit proved to be too much for the Tigers as they dropped the first game by a final score of 12-2.

Game 2; As game two got underway, the scene was all too familiar as the Tigers fell quickly behind the Trolls. The bats would struggle most of the game, but in the 6th inning, two Tigers came around to score. Center Fielder, Jared Garnaat, reached first by a walk to lead off the inning and made the Trolls pay by stealing both 2nd and 3rd base within three pitches. Not to be outdone, Dylan Thomas later got on and also swiped 2nd and 3rd base himself. Grace finished the day with a head turning 9 stolen bases to the Trolls’ 3. It wasn’t enough however, as the Tigers would drop the nightcap 13-3.

Coach Wolfe added his thoughts on the day, “The boys played well for their first game of the spring! I was impressed with our at bats and base stealing on the day, but we still have a few things to work on. If we can limit some costly mistakes on the defensive side of the ball, we’ll give ourselves a better chance to win some ball games.”

Up next for the Tigers, they will be on the road once again facing Trinity Christian on Saturday, March 4th for another double header. First pitch will be at 12pm CST.
