Build Your Future: Carpentry & Construction

May 27, 2025 | Blog

In today’s workforce, the demand for skilled tradespeople is higher than ever. Across the U.S., there are more than 60,000 jobs open for individuals trained in technical trades, and the number continues to grow. In response, Grace Christian University has partnered with the West Michigan Construction Institute (WMCI) to launch a unique and powerful academic pathway: one that allows students to gain hands-on trade certifications in Carpentry & Construction while earning a Christ-centered associate degree.

A Partnership with Purpose

This collaboration came together through conversations with Grace’s strongest supporters, many of whom are Christian business leaders. These donors loved the mission of Grace Christian University but shared a common challenge: they couldn’t offer internships to college students because their businesses rely on skilled labor. They needed tradespeople, builders, technicians, and craftsmen, and they often turned to WMCI to find them.

As the need for talent in construction and related industries continues to rise, the leaders at Grace and WMCI saw an opportunity. Could they bridge the gap between college education and the trades? Could they offer students a chance to pursue both pathways, academic and technical, without compromise?

The answer was yes.

The Best of Both Worlds

Starting in Fall 2025, students can enroll in a new joint program that combines an associate degree from Grace Christian University with a trade certification from WMCI. Students take general education and foundational coursework at Grace, including English, speech, and history, while completing hands-on training in one of WMCI’s specialized programs, such as carpentry, concrete, or plumbing.

This dual enrollment model allows students to:

  • Earn a two-year associate degree grounded in biblical truth.
  • Complete trade certification in a high-demand field.
  • Prepare for business ownership or future bachelor’s degrees.
  • Get real-world experience that leads directly into meaningful careers.

“This is about offering students an and narrative,” said Jen Schottke, President of WMCI. “They don’t have to choose between a trade or a college degree. With this partnership, they can pursue both, at the same time.”

A Workforce Ready for West Michigan

With major development projects happening across Grand Rapids and the greater West Michigan area, the need for qualified construction professionals is urgent. The average tradesperson today is 42 years old, and nearly 25% of the industry is set to retire within the next decade.

“There are students in our community who want to work with their hands and also lead businesses,” said Grace Christian University President Dr. Ken Kemper. “This program helps them do both while developing character, faith, and leadership rooted in Christ.”

Employers are already taking note. Many local businesses that hire from WMCI are also longtime supporters of Grace. This new program offers them a pool of emerging talent, trained both technically and spiritually, for internships, summer work, and long-term careers.

A Christ-Centered Foundation

This isn’t just a smart career move, it’s a calling. As Dr. Kemper shared, “Jesus was a carpenter. The one who unites us in Christ also worked with His hands. There’s a deep value in combining vocational training with spiritual formation.”

At Grace, students grow academically and spiritually, preparing for a life of service wherever God leads them. Through this partnership, students are equipped not only to meet the workforce needs of today but to become ethical leaders who make an eternal impact.

Enrollment Now Open

Grace Christian University and WMCI are now enrolling students for the inaugural cohort launching in Fall 2025. The first class will be limited to just 16 students, ensuring personal attention and a strong sense of community.
