Jasmine’s Grand Rapids Gold Internship

Mar 20, 2025 | Blog

My name is Jasmine Branch, and I am a senior majoring in Sports Communication and Management at Grace Christian University. Throughout my academic journey, I have been fortunate to gain hands-on experience in the field, particularly through my internship with the Grand Rapids Gold. This opportunity has allowed me to develop invaluable skills, build relationships, and further solidify my passion for sports communication and management.

A Day in the Life at Grand Rapids Gold

Each day at Grand Rapids Gold is a new and exciting challenge. My role within the promotions team involves engaging with fans, organizing game-day activities, and ensuring that the audience remains energized throughout the event. A typical day starts with reading the script to understand what games and promotions will take place. I then gather the necessary equipment and props to execute these activities smoothly.

As soon as the doors open, my primary focus shifts to audience engagement. I scan the crowd, seeking enthusiastic participants for the night’s games and presentations. Approaching individuals and encouraging them to join in requires a mix of confidence, energy, and persuasion. While most people are eager to participate, there are moments when I need to convince hesitant guests. In these instances, I utilize relationship-building techniques, assessing my audience and tailoring my approach to make them feel comfortable and excited.

Developing Communication and Leadership Skills

Working in promotions requires effective communication skills. One of the key lessons I’ve learned is how to connect with different audience segments. If I’m engaging with a young child or an adult fan, I adjust my approach accordingly. Offering incentives, such as prizes, can be a great motivator, but ultimately, it’s about making each person feel included in the experience.

My role also requires adaptability. In a fast-paced sports environment, last-minute changes and unexpected challenges are common. I have learned to think quickly and problem-solve efficiently, ensuring that every game day runs smoothly. This ability to stay calm under pressure and make real-time decisions has been one of the most valuable takeaways from my internship.

Learning at Grace Christian University

My coursework at Grace Christian University has played a significant role in preparing me for this internship. The Crisis Communication class, for example, has taught me how to handle unexpected challenges with confidence. In sports promotions, things don’t always go as planned, and having strategies in place to address issues efficiently is crucial. The class provided me with a strong foundation in problem-solving and quick decision-making.

Additionally, my Leadership Communication course has helped me step out of my comfort zone. Approaching strangers, speaking in front of crowds, and managing high-energy environments have all been enhanced by the skills I developed in this class. The ability to lead and engage with an audience has been instrumental in my success at Grand Rapids Gold.

Growing Through Transformational Relationships

My time at Grace Christian University has impacted me through the transformational relationships I found here. I have grown in communication, leadership, and adaptability through both my coursework and internship. Through mentorship, collaboration, and supportive friendships, I have grown into a confident person who is ready to take on the challenges life throws at me.

The Value of Serving

I have learned the value of serving others, recognizing that true leadership involves uplifting and supporting those around me. Through my role with Grand Rapids Gold, I have had the privilege of creating meaningful experiences for fans, encouraging a sense of excitement for them at the games. I have also found joy in inspiring young athletes, offering encouragement, and showing them the importance of perseverance and teamwork. Engaging with individuals from different backgrounds has given me a deeper appreciation for the impact that service can have, not just on others but on my own personal growth as well. In the classroom, on the field, and throughout my future career, I strive to serve as a Courageous Ambassador for Christ ensuring that my actions reflect my faith and values. My goal is to extend my impact beyond sports, always seeking ways to make a positive difference in the lives of those around me.

Faith and Identity

Beyond the technical skills I’ve gained, this experience has reinforced an important life lesson: knowing who I am outside of my career and education. One piece of advice I would give to students considering a degree in sports communication is to always remember their identity in Christ. It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of sports, the thrill of competition, and the pursuit of career goals, but at the end of the day, our true purpose lies in something greater.

This belief has influenced my career aspirations. When I graduate, I hope to become a counselor for student-athletes. My goal is to help them understand that their worth is not solely defined by their performance on the field but by their relationship with Christ. Many athletes tie their identity to their sport, and I want to help them see beyond that, to recognize their value and purpose beyond athletics.

Looking Ahead

As I reflect on my time at Grace Christian University and my internship at Grand Rapids Gold, I am incredibly grateful for the opportunities I’ve had to grow both professionally and personally. This experience has given me a clearer vision for my future in sports communication and management, reinforcing my passion for working with athletes and making a positive impact in their lives.

I am excited for what lies ahead, trusting that God will lead me in the right direction. I know that the skills and lessons I’ve gained will serve me well. Ultimately, my goal is to use my experiences to uplift and encourage others, helping them navigate their journey with faith and confidence.

If you’re passionate about sports and want to turn that passion into a meaningful career, Grace Christian University’s Sports Communication & Management degree can help you get there. With hands-on experiences, faith-driven leadership training, and a supportive community, you’ll graduate prepared to make an eternal impact for Christ in the sports industry.
