Julia’s Ministry Internship

Dec 30, 2024 | Blog

Julia Schultz, a senior at Grace Christian University, is currently interning at Grace Bible Fellowship, where she serves as a childcare director and supports various church ministries. She is set to complete her internship this spring, aligning with the end of the school semester.. Reflecting on her experience, Julia shares how her time at Grace Christian University and her ministry internship has helped her grow in faith, sharpen her leadership skills, and prepare for a lifetime of service. Her story is one of learning, growth, and a deep commitment to serving others.

What Julia Learned Through Her Internship

Julia’s internship has shown her invaluable insights into the inner workings of ministry and church life. One of her most significant responsibilities was managing communication within the church, a role that honed her organizational and interpersonal skills.

“At the end of each month, I send emails to leaders and teachers about curriculum handoffs for the next month,” Julia explained. “My biggest role is to be a constant communicator for people within the church and to be there for whatever they need.”

Julia has been gaining an understanding of the unique culture of small churches. “I grew up in a big church, so becoming part of a small church and learning about that culture has been eye-opening,” she said.

She is learning the importance of meeting people where they are, whether children, volunteers, or older members of the congregation. “My church doesn’t have many young people my age, so I’ve been able to create a community not only with college students but also with older members of the church. Their wisdom has been such a blessing to me.”

Discovering Strengths and Areas for Growth

Throughout her internship, Julia identified areas where she thrived and others where she wants to improve. “I’ve been able to practice my communication skills and learn what expectations will be placed on me in ministry,” she shared. “Time management and public speaking are areas I want to work on, so I’m better equipped in the future.”

Julia also reflects on the fulfillment she finds in serving, particularly in connecting with people and building relationships. “I’ve learned to meet people where they’re at,” she said. “It’s been amazing to see how God uses those moments to bring people together and grow in their walk with God.”

The hands-on nature of her internship has pushed her out of her comfort zone. From leading Sunday services to organizing children’s programs, Julia is discovering the joy of stepping into leadership roles and learning through these experiences.

Serving Across Generations

One of the most rewarding aspects of Julia’s internship is with people of all ages. Whether she is mentoring volunteers, connecting with children in Sunday School, or learning from older members of the congregation, Julia finds joy in building relationships.

Julia’s work also puts her in front of the congregation, a challenge that has helped her grow in confidence. “Doing scripture readings, making announcements, and praying over missionaries were all new experiences for me,” she said. “They were scary at first, but they’ve helped me see how fulfilling it is to serve the church in this role”

Through these experiences, Julia realized how Grace Christian University’s emphasis on transformational relationships played a vital role in her growth. “The focus on relationships at Grace has taught me the importance of connection and mentorship,” she explained. “It’s not just about what I can give, but how I can learn from others and be shaped by those around me. That perspective has transformed how I view service in the church.”

This foundation of meaningful relationships has equipped Julia to bridge generational gaps and serve her community with confidence and compassion.

The Role of Leadership and Mentorship

Grace Christian University’s Leadership and Ministry program equips students with the tools they need to lead effectively in ministry. Julia credits her professors and mentors with helping her understand the nuances of leadership and the importance of humility.

“One thing I’ve learned is to stay teachable,” she said. “The biggest downfall of leaders can be pride, but Grace emphasizes the importance of being humble and open to feedback.”

She also appreciated the program’s focus on practical application. “Through my internship, I’ve been able to take what I learned in the classroom and apply it directly to my work at Grace Bible Fellowship,” she explained.

The program’s emphasis on serving others aligns with Julia’s heart for ministry. “Being a servant-leader means putting others first and always being ready to show up, even when it’s inconvenient. That’s a lesson I’ll carry with me for the rest of my life.”

Reflections on Growth

Julia’s internship is not only teaching her practical skills but is also giving her a deeper understanding of herself. “I’ve definitely grown in managing expectations, both others’ expectations of me and my own,” she said.

She admitted that she used to worry excessively about what others thought of her. “I cared so much about doing everything perfectly and not letting anyone down,” she said. “But this internship has taught me that it’s okay to make mistakes. My coworkers and mentors have shown me grace and guided me in becoming more equipped for ministry.”

Julia also shared that she wishes she had started volunteering earlier in her college career. “Looking back, I realize how fulfilling it is to be part of a church community. I wish I had gotten more involved sooner,” she said.

Advice for Future Students

As Julia prepares to graduate, she’s already thinking about her next steps. While she’s still praying for clarity about her future, she knows one thing for certain: her calling is to serve.

“For younger students, my advice is to be patient and teachable,” she said. “Listen to those around you and trust that God has a plan for your life. Surround yourself with people who love you and want to see you grow.”

Julia’s story also highlights the importance of taking advantage of every opportunity. “Go to internship fairs, volunteer in your church, and say yes to roles that stretch you,” she advised. “You never know how God will use those experiences to shape you.”

Looking to the Future

As Julia looks ahead, she is excited to see where God will lead her. “Whether it’s missions, local church work, or mentoring young women, I’m passionate about making an eternal impact,” she said.

Julia is also considering opportunities in coaching, a field where she hopes to lead young women and help them develop their leadership potential. “I’ve been praying about what my future will hold, and while I don’t have all the answers yet, I know that God has equipped me for whatever comes next,” she said.

The Eternal Impact of Ministry

Julia’s journey is a testament to the power of learning, staying teachable, and serving with an open heart. Through her time at Grace Christian University and her internship at Grace Bible Fellowship, she has grown as a leader and deepened her relationship with Christ.

As she prepares to graduate, Julia is ready to step into her calling as a courageous ambassador for Christ, prepared to lead, serve, and make an eternal impact wherever God calls her.

Why Internships Are Required at Grace Christian University

Internships are designed to provide students with hands-on experience in their field of study, bridging the gap between classroom learning and real-world application. For students in the Leadership and Ministry program, internships are particularly vital.

At Grace, the goal is to prepare students to be courageous ambassadors for Christ equipped to serve in a variety of ministry settings. Requiring an internship ensures that students gain practical skills, develop their leadership abilities, and experience the realities of ministry work before graduation.

“Our internship program is designed to help students discover their calling while giving them a safe environment to learn, grow and serve,” said one of Julia’s professors. “It’s about equipping them to serve others effectively and preparing them for the challenges they’ll face in their future careers.”

Through internships, students like Julia can apply biblical principles they’ve learned in a hands-on setting, grow from the wisdom of seasoned mentors, and serve through building relationships within their community. The experience also helps students clarify their vocational goals and strengthens their confidence in their ability to lead and serve.
