The disciple whom Jesus loved wrote the fourth Gospel. In the first chapter he introduces Jesus as the Word who became human (“flesh”), and he uses a fascinating phrase to describe what Jesus Christ did:
Jesus Christ has lavished His grace upon us when we were undeserving (Romans 5:8) and in desperate need of love and forgiveness. He restored us to a place of honor when we deserved the shame and disgrace of our wrongdoing.
In our daily lives we experience not only the grace of our salvation and separation from the punishment for our sins, but we also receive grace for living out the life we received as a gift of God. (Ephesians 2:8, 9) The Apostle Paul charges Titus that the same grace which was revealed to save all men, is the agent of growth and influence for good conduct and righteous living:
What a great example of grace for our past mistakes, grace for our present situation of life, and grace to guide our future! Grace heaped upon grace, going before us, among us, and around us. We are given grace to be a people of grace. We must be ministers of grace in this world. The message we proclaim is the grace of God demonstrated in Jesus Christ, revealed to the Apostle Paul, and practiced by all His people in this age of Grace.
